HD 35155 is a very unusual interacting binary consisting of an S-type primary and a hot companion. IUE observations (Ake, Johnson, and Ameen, ApJ, 383, 842) show a variable UV excess and extreme velocity width of the C IV emission line (FWHM > 2500 km/sec), suggesting a binary system composed of a white dwarf surrounded by a rotating accretion disk. An orbital period of 637.5 days has been established by Jorissen and Mayor (in press). The Ritter Observatory 1-meter telescope, fiber-fed echelle spectrograph, and CCD detector are currently being utilized to monitor the H-alpha profile variability of HD 35155. Additional observations have been obtained through the McMath stellar synoptic program. Our data span a baseline of over two years and indicate highly variable and unusual H-alpha absorption profiles. These profiles have varied from an extremely broad feature with two components, to a relatively normal profile, to having an emission wing on either side of the absorption feature. This variability is likely due to mass transfer, and our data suggest that the transfer is episodic in nature and not correlated with the orbital phase of the binary system. This research has been supported in part by grants from NASA.
