H I observations with the Westerbork Radio Telescope were made of a field of 40' diameter of a component (HVC 139+28-190) of the chain A of high-velocity clouds. With a synthesized beam of 50" × 50" and a velocity resolution of 2.1 km s-1 internal was revealed down to a scale of 1'. A general survey of the fine-structure is given in Fig.s 2 and 4. On the average the individual features have velocity half-widths of about 5 km s-1 and column densities of about 1.0 × 1020 cm-2. If the distance is 2 kpc the space densities range mostly from 25 to 100 cm-3. Several features have a filamentary form.
Comparison with a single dish observation with the Dwingeloo telescope shows that the features seen by the WSRT comprise only one sixth of the total HI in the field. The fine-structure features lie embedded in the large cloud; most are probably confined by the pressure in this cloud. Their kinetic temperature may be ˜50 K; that of the large cloud should then be at least 1000 K; it may be considerably higher.
The dense features are distributed in an irregular fashion in velocity as well as position. The mean random velocity relative to the average velocity (-190 km s-1) of the cloud is 7.2 km s-1.
Several continuum sources have been observed in the field. The 3 strongest yield lower limits for the spin temperature.
