A review of known observational facts will be presented, with the emphasis on data relevant to the distance scale to the bursters. Arguments for and against cosmological distance will be reviewed and discussed, together with the future observational tests to be made. The restrictions on the cosmological scenario, as well as on the source models will be discussed. Among the known types of objects massive binary stars are the most likely progenitors of gamma-ray bursters.
