In the past few years, coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been revealed through remote-sensing observations by heliospheric imagers (HIs), providing the first comprehensive view of CMEs in the heliosphere. CMEs are routinely tracked up to Earth's orbit and this information can be used to improve space weather forecasting. However, analysis methods have not been fully tested yet, which still limits our scientific understanding of CMEs. In this talk, I present some of the methods used to derive CME properties from HI images, focusing on fitting and stereoscopic methods. Then, I discuss how analytical models and 3-D MHD numerical simulations can be used to test and validate these methods. Finally, I discuss the results of the analyses of well observed CMEs, which tend to support the view that most CMEs are minimally deflected in the heliosphere.
