Evolutionary models of massive stars available in the literature have been used to construct synthetic upper parts of the C-M diagrams and related luminosity and color distributions for a large range of ages. The comparison with observational data shows that these distributions appear to be useful for rough estimates of cluster ages and helpful in estimates of cluster reddenings and distances. The set of empirical 'pattern' age distributions transformed into the R, G system can be applied to the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey Atlas data for statistical galactic studies. Even rough stellar image diameter measurements on the POSS Atlas prints seem to be sufficient to compare the global characteristics of clusters forming 'optical' pairs.
