The paper computes synthetic fluxes in the wavelength region 490-530 nm in order to investigate the behavior of the Mg indices: Mgb, Mg1, and the DDO '51' filter bandpasses, and of its main molecular constituents: the MgH, C2, Cn, and TiO molecular bands, as a function of the stellar parameters effective temperature, gravity log, and metallicity. The validity of using the Mg indices as metallicity indicators is confirmed. It is concluded that Mg2 and Mgb indices are adequate metallicity indicators, since they are virtually independent of temperature and gravity.
