Theoretical models predicting a clump of stars along the red giant branches of population II stellar clusters have been based on the assumption of a sharp discontinuity of the chemical composition at the bottom edge of external convection. The influence on the clumps of a smoothing of this chemical discontinuity is investigated by using numerical experiments. We show that for reasonable assumptions about the size of the partially mixed region the occurrence of red giant 'bumps' remains a firm theoretical prediction. The structural behavior of clump stars is briefly discussed.
