The Hipparcos satellite has a predefined observing program given by an Input Catalogue with 118,000 entries. This includes about 10,000 members of known double or multiple systems (with separations above 0.1 arcsec and magnitude differences below 4-5), which will be observably non-single and thus need a more complex reduction procedure. Also, a similar number of objects showing deviations from a single-star observation model will be included in these 'double star' reductions, and a few thousand hitherto unknown doubles may thus be discovered. This paper describes the methods used by the Northern Data Analysis Consortium (NDAC) for detecting suspected non-singles and for determining the photometric and astrometric parameters for the non-single objects. A key feature of these methods is that they use the standard reduction results for calibrating and collecting all the observations of a specific object. Only after this derivation of individual 'Case History Files' is completed, the astrometric parameters are determined for one object at a time by one of several solution programs. The solutions use all the available information in one step, and all double star parameters are in the absolute reference system defined by the standard Hipparcos reductions. Some early results derived from 'provisional' data tapes are given which illustrate and validate the main steps of the processing.
