An extended class of dwarf novae is considered, taking into account U Gem, Z Cam, SU UMa, and UX-UMa stars. The entire category of cataclysmic binaries can be divided into two large groups, including novae and dwarf novae. The characteristics of these objects are investigated and compared, giving particular attention to those parameters which are more or less accessible to direct observation and which are also important for the determination of the binary structure. These parameters include orbital periods, masses and UBV colors. The UBV colors provide a basis for the study of the continuous energy distribution in the visible spectrum. Such studies permit conclusions with respect to the temperature and the relative luminosity of the gaseous disk, and the influence of the secondary star. Attention is given to empirical relations between orbital periods and stellar colors, the frequency distribution of orbital periods for dwarf novae and novae, the two-color diagram, and absolute magnitude relations for dwarf novae.
