The authors review the evidence for the presence of dust around cataclysmic variables, with particular emphasis on classical novae. Two general models - rapid grain formation and pre-existing grains - for the infrared development of novae are critically discussed and relevant observations of other cataclysmic variables that have some bearing on these models are described.
