Scientific paper

A broad review of the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique and its applications is given. The paper starts with an overview and proceeds to show VLBI in a historical perspective followed by a theoretical background. Basic formulas relating the VLBI observables to different astrophysical, astrometric, and geophysical parameters are discussed. The subsequent parts deal with the existing VLBI systems, methods of measurements, and various applications of the VLBI technique.
