Methods for computing absolute magnitudes from small trigonometric
parallaxes are reviewed and discussed. It is demonstrated that a careful
examination of the sample space of observable (apparent magnitude,
parallax) is necessary for clarifying the difference - and overlap -
between magnitude limited and volume limited samples.
