The spectral properties of Active Galactic Nuclei and the physical processes occurring in them are reviewed. The class of objects discussed here includes all objects with an energy output that is not usually associated with normal stellar processes and concentrated in a small nuclear region. Of the three components of the spectrum, only the continuum and emission lines are discussed. It is suggested that the ionization parameter, X-ray heating and optical depth, hot phase, and dust are the key questions in understanding the nature of the nuclear activity. A new scheme is proposed in which all objects, from quasars to Liners, are classified according to their luminosity and spectral properties. It is argued that the phenomenon of nuclear activity is quite common in the Universe and covers 5 orders of magnitude in energy output.
