Current methods for detecting quasars at frequencies ranging from radio to X-ray are reviewed. Attention is given to the importance of strong differential evolution in radio emissions with both flat and steep spectra, and to the relevance of selection effects in optical surveys. The use of large measuring machines for the selection of QSOs from slitless spectroscopy plates is also discussed. Photographic reproductions of a few of these plates are provided.
