Model approximations of satellite measurements of the magnetospheric magnetic field are used in investigating the structure of the cusps as a function of the level of the ground disturbance and the polarity of the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field. Data gathered by the IMP and NEOS satellites during the years 1966-1972 are used. Attention is also given to the effect that the geometry of the magnetospheric field has on the configuration of the dayside intrusion zone for energetic particles in the region where the cusp projects into the ionosphere. It is found that field-aligned currents significantly elongate the intrusion zone in the longitudinal direction. This effect is especially noticeable with high levels of disturbance and with negative polarity of Bz in the solar wind.
