Variations of composition with altitude in the lower thermosphere, like those in the upper thermosphere are dominated by diffusive separation. Above a certain height, which can vary depending on the mass of the species considered, turbulence no longer uniformly mixes the atmosphere, so the density of each species falls off depending on its mass and the temperature. The height at which this occurs is, of course, at or below the height of the turbopause. This presentation does not attempt to address the details of diffusive separation, instead it will address how the composition structure set up by diffusive separation reacts to forcing by other processes in the region below 200 km. Particular attention will be paid to the effects of geomagnetic activity and how changes in minor species composition reacts to this forcing and interacts with changes in major species composition. Future ways that this understanding can be improved will also be discussed.
