Relations determining the percentage representation of the light reflected by a grating are derived. To construct the characteristic curve of a plate, zero order spectra of star trails were used. The stellar magnitudes of star trails on the plate were derived from their theoretical magnitudes corrected for the speed of the stars on the plate and for the effect of the diffraction transmission grating with a triangular scratch cross-section. A numerical example is also given.
