Measurements acquired by the Remote Atmospheric Ionospheric Detection System (RAIDS) EUV Spectrometer on the International Space Station provide the most comprehensive test to date of dayside ionospheric remote sensing using the OII 83.4 nm airglow feature. The key new data that have been obtained are the simultaneous measurements of the OII 61.7 nm airglow feature that is produced along with 83.4 nm via photoionization and photoelectron impact ionization of atomic oxygen in the lower thermosphere. While the 83.4 nm feature resonantly scatters with the ionosphere, the 61.7 nm feature does not and therefore provides a direct measure of this otherwise obscured initial source that illuminates the ionosphere from below. Earlier studies based on a limited set of observations have shown the difficulty in uniquely inferring ionospheric content from the 83.4 nm feature without a priori information such as the initial source that is measured here. RAIDS has been operating since October 2009 and represents the most extensive collection of OII 83.4 and 61.7 nm data ever gathered, covering a wide range of solar zenith angles, geographic regions, and local times. These measurements are compared to initial source estimations in current state-of-the-art models. In addition, we highlight the unique combination of a low-altitude (350 km) platform and the potential overlap of the initial source region with the solar minimum ionosphere that presents a challenging but potentially enlightening environment to truly study the potential for routine, global daytime ionospheric remote sensing.
