The nadir-viewing Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) UV/VIS spectrometer on the ERS-2 satellite has proven to be an important tool in the study of meteoric metal atoms and ions, including Mg, Mg+ and other metals, in the upper atmosphere. During 1996 and 1997, atmospheric metals show interesting spatial variations on both large and small scale. This work will quantify and identify the atmospheric processes responsible for these longitudinal differences, especially on the zonal scale. Frequency analysis will identify global scale waves. In addition animations with a several day temporal resolution will be presented in order to test the possibility of using meteoric metals as tracers of middle atmosphere dynamics.
