Variable Stars, The Galaxy

Scientific paper

The study of the long-period variables stars (LPVS) subsustem spatial distribution on the basis of all data from the 3rd edition of the General Catalog of Variable Stars is made. This catalogue is complete concerning the LPVS down to mpg = 11.5 mag. The new values of mean parallaxes and absolute magnitudes of LPVS at the highest maximum of brightness variation are determined. The luminosity function of these stars shows that the LPVS phenomenon leads to the brightness variations with periods shorter than 700 days. The scale heights in the LPVS disk subsystems changes from 1 kpc for the oldest stars (T≥10 Gyr) down to 0.2 -- 0.5 kpc for younger stars with T = 3...9 Gyrs. The scale length in these subsystems does not depend on the age and is 2.1 ± 0.2 kpc. The quantitative expression for the relation between the spatial distribution ellipsoid semiaxes ratio a/b and velocity dispersion s (in units of km/s) is: a/b = (0.05±0.01)σ0.5 - (0.111 ±0.006). The spatial distribution of LPVS corresponds to the Galaxy model: spheroid + set of disks + close spiral arm with an elliptic cross section whose width is 3 kpc, density ratio in arms and between them is 1.3 : 0.3 and characteristic angle is 12 deg. The age gradient is observed across this arm in the solar neighborhood: the oldest stars concentrate on the arm inner edge.
