The profiles of the hydrogen emission line Hβ in the nuclei of Seyfert galaxies and quasars were calculated for 3 models of distribution of matter (spherical, disk and cone) and a number of kinematic models. It was taken into account that gaseous clouds in the nuclei are optically thick for soft ionizing X-rays and are not transparent in the optical range due to the dust. This provides the observed asymmetry of line profiles. It is impossible to reject or to prefer some calculated geometrical models using only their line profiles, but a class of the most probable kinematic models can be preferred for each of these models. The response of line profiles to a rapid jump of ionizing radiation has been calculated.
