The explicit form of the equations governing the internal structure of stars that rotate with constant angular velocity is established, in terms of Clairaut coordinates in which the radial coordinate is replaced by the total potential that remains constant over distorted level surfaces in equilibrium configurations. Although the curvilinear Clairaut coordinates are not orthogonal, this disadvantage is compensated for by the fact that they allow the problem's fundamental equation to assume the form of ordinary differential equations subject to simple boundary conditions.
