Upper mesospheric rotational temperatures from hydroxyl airglow were measured at Resolute (74 N) in northern Canada for eight winters from 2001 to 2009. The instrument employed was a Spectral Airglow Temperature Imager (SATI) that images the spectrum of a portion of the Meinel (6,2) band and also the O2 Atm (0,1) band. Lower stratospheric temperatures at the same site were available from radiosonde observations, beginning in 1966. It has been well established that on a global basis there is a correlation between the lower stratospheric temperature and the solar flux for the westerly phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). It was reported earlier by G. Shepherd et al. JGR 2010 for this limited time period and this specific location that the same correlation exists for the hydroxyl rotational temperatures in the upper mesosphere, at roughly 87 km. It was also demonstrated that there was a strong correlation between the temperatures of the lower stratosphere and upper mesosphere for the westerly phase of the QBO, but not for the easterly phase, suggesting a coupling between these two regions. Subsequently the suggestion has been extended through an examination of the relationship of the Resolute site with the polar vortex. The years between 2001 to the present have been studied in great detail using temperature and species measurements from the MLS experiment on the Aura spacecraft, and the SABER instrument on the TIMED mission allowing the Resolute observations to be placed in a larger context. In addition there is a wealth of other observations and studies that have been employed for the characterization of the polar vortex during this period, as well as over decadal time intervals.
