Spectra of six broad absorption line quasars show that the low ionization Mg II λ2800 line does not participate in the broad self absorption seen for the higher ionization species. Since only six objects have been observed the statistics is poor but the available evidence suggests that the rapid flows producing the broad absorption lines contain only matter in high ionization states.
