The current status of the spectroscopy of multiply ionized atoms is reviewed, with emphasis on the research related to the identification of the principal spectral lines and the determination of the energy structure of ions. Attention is given to elements that are of interest for astrophysical studies and nuclear fission. Progress in the use of fast ion beams is discussed, and some problems encountered in the interpretation of spectra are examined.
