An analysis is presented of explosive He burning at constant pressure and density and the resultant detonation wave structure on a white dwarf. The burning is governed by the formation of C-12 nuclei in the 3-alpha yields C-12 reaction and their fusion with alpha particles. The time scale depends on density and decreases with increasing temperature. Progressively heavier elements are formed with He-4 depletion. Solution of the detonation adiabatic curve along with the Jouguet condition and the equations for nuclear statistical equilibrium defines the temperature behind the wave front as a function of the density ahead of the front. Limiting conditions are characterized for synthesis of light elements up to atomic number 56. The ignition of He-4 by a shock wave produces heavier elements. The calculations rule out type I supernovae as helium detonations on white dwarfs.
