The magnetic fields of spiral galaxies (SG) are characterized in a review of recent observations and theoretical models. The principles involved in optical and radio observations are explained, sample images and tables of SG parameters are provided, and the random and spiral/circular components of the magnetic fields are described. Theoretical explanations of galactic-scale magnetic-field creation, amplification, and orientation; spiral-arm effects; intermediate-scale effects of a companion galaxy or disk instabilities; and localized effects of magnetic bubbles are summarized. Data on the magnetic field of the Galaxy are included for comparison.
