The thermosphere, the ionosphere and the magnetosphere are the upper regions of the Earth atmosphere. The dynamics of the neutral thermospheric medium is mainly controlled by the solar heating whereas the one of the ionospheric cold and the magnetospheric hot ionized regions is controlled by the magnetic field of the Earth. The CETP group built a fluid model of the convection of the magnetospheric plasma including its coupling with the ionosphere due to precipitation of magnetospheric particles, field aligned currents and the electric coupling along the magnetic field lines connecting the magnetosphere to the ionosphere. The NCAR group built a fluid model of the thermosphere and the ionosphere including the couplings between these two regions due to particles exchange, the friction between the ionospheric ions and the neutral thermospheric particles and the electric ionospheric dynamo. We will illustrate the importance of the main couplings between these three regions and we will show how it is possible to combine the CETP and the NCAR models to self-consistently simulate the dynamics of the thermosphere -ionosphere-magnetosphere system.
