A number of questions related to the origin and dynamics of geological processes in the lithosphere are discussed. Several theoretical models for the observed lateral variations with age of thermomechanical, seismic, and electrical properties of the oceanic lithosphere are reviewed, based on recent data. The results of a number of studies of the dynamics of tectonic plates, hot spots, and convection are also discussed, and some new areas of research are identified. A graphic illustration is offered which describes several of the major theoretical models of lithospheric evolution.
