Observational data are used to estimate the masses of the stellar components of the massive X-ray source LMC X-3, and to formulate two models of the heating of a binary system. Calculations are given of the optical light curve, heating by X-ray emission, and the effects of eclipses of the accretion disk by the visible star and vice versa. In the models, the mass of the unseen component lies in the range from 7 to 25 solar mass with a mass ratio of 1.6 to 4.5. It is found that LMC X-3 is significantly different from all other known X-ray binary systems. An unrealistically large decrease in the observed semiamplitude of the radial-velocity curve is required to obtain a mass ratio greater than one. It is concluded that if the optical identification of LMC X-3 is correct, the unseen component is most likely a black hole.
