A star counting program which uses offline data from the Astroscan measuring machine was developed. Since homogeneous, large files of photographic material of most of the sky already exists in the form of the Palomar/SERC/ESO surveys it was decided to tune the parameters of the program to these (survey) Schmidt plates. For counts in nebulous areas it is important to make high resolution maps of the underlying background structures. Correlation of these, multicolor background maps and the stellar density maps can separate different physical structures in complicated areas. The properties of interstellar dust seem to explain the observed correlation between the interstellar extinction and surface brightness in most of the area investigated.
