Strong and highly variable optical polarization as well as dramatic brightness variations (3 mag within 1 week) were detected during optical observations of the flat-spectrum radio source PKS 0219-164. No strong emission lines are present in low-dispersion spectra, so PKS 0219-164 is classified as an extremely variable BL Lacertae object. The observed variations in polarization and flux fit into a simple model, in which the optical radiation is emitted by the synchrotron process in a rotating magnetic field. Further observations are proposed to test the validity of this model.
