Comets: Water Vapor

Scientific paper

SWAN (Solar Wind ANisotropies) is a ultraviolet photometer onboard the international satellite SOHO (SOlar Heliospheric Observatory). It is able to measure the Lyman alpha emission from hydrogen atoms of the cometary cloud when the water evaporating from the nucleus is photodissociated by the solar rays. Then one can deduce the vapor production rate against the heliocentric distance using a simple model of the distribution of the atoms in the coma.
