Evidence from the dynamics of nine isolated binary pairs of dwarf irregular galaxies indicates very large mass-to-light ratios (20-5000 in solar units) on scales of 40-850 kpc. The existence of dark mass in dwarf irregulars is a necessary consequence of the view that dwarf spheroidals are the remnant of stripped irregulars, as it explains their continued existence after shedding a large fraction of their mass, as well as their final high mass-to-light ratios. Given the number of dwarf galaxies, the mass of the universe may well be dominated by matter associated with them.
