The secular and dynamical stability of contact binary models are investigated for various masses Mp, Ms of the primary and secondary components. It is found that, in an Mp - Ms diagram, a stable strip of finite width separates secularly unstable from dynamically unstable regions. The significance of this result for the theory of W UMa stars is discussed.
