Data from the multi-beam Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter onboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter enable the characterization of the lunar surface at a wide range of scales, from a few meters to kilometers and beyond. We focus on the polar regions because of LRO’s polar orbit coverage and resulting higher data density. The altimetric measurements are used to produce two-dimensional slope and roughness maps at baselines from ~50m to 30km. The laser pulse width measurements, which did not exist in other recent laser altimeter instruments, are sensitive to slope and surface roughness at shorter scales (1-5m), but are not fully calibrated. The local slope accounts for only a small part of the observed pulse spreading. We compare the roughness inferred from the pulse to estimates made from altimetric data points in areas of high data density (where orbit groundtracks repeatedly cross due to the mission profile and lunar gravity field). We compare those derived products in selected sites over the polar regions.
