Optical observations of the interstellar gas in and around the heliosphere bring constraints on the heliospheric structure. I focus on two types of observations: -heliospheric H seen in emission: preliminary results of the SOHO/SWAN experiment, when compared with theoretical predictions, strongly favor a circumsolar electron density of the order of 0.04 cm-3. -heated heliospheric H from the interface seen in absorption: I show some recent developments on the detection of neutral H from our heliosphere through its absorption lines in nearby star spectra. The same spectra also show absorption lines due to heated H around the stars themselves (the astrospheres).
