History Of Astronomy: Distance Scale, History Of Astronomy: Stellar Populations
Scientific paper
The revision of the distance scale involved the abandonment by Baade of his view that the Large Magellanic Cloud must be a pure Population I system. Since this earlier view was strongly dependent on Thackeray's work, it is of interest to place on record the interaction between these two astronomers as recorded in their correspondence. The interaction is also of interest as that between an astronomer who already had an established international reputation and who was just beginning to use the new 200-inch telescope, and a younger man who was starting to use the new 74-inch Radcliffe reflector, then the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere.
