Galactic Disks: Optical Thickness, Tully-Fisher Relation: Distance Indicators

Scientific paper

The authors point out the implication of their work on the Tully-Fisher distance indicator, using an angular size limited sample of more than 5000 spiral galaxies, on the opaqueness problem. They conclude that the inclination dependent behaviour of these galaxies is consistent with a rather large optical thickness at the surface brightness limit 25 mag per square second, in any case significantly larger than the classical value of about 0.2.
