There is compelling evidence that the Martian environment, climate, and volatile system have changed significantly over time. Evidence includes indications of liquid water that require a different climate; of loss of atmospheric gas to space; and of formation of carbonates from atmospheric CO2. Despite the observations, we do not have a unique understanding of what the climate was like in the past, what controlled the climate, what processes dominated its evolution, or where the volatiles have gone. These issues all bear on the nature and evolution of Martian habitability and on where and how we would look for evidence of present or past life on Mars. I will summarize our current understanding of the available observations and what they tell us about history of the environment, and will outline the possible scenarios for climate change and what observations can help us to better constrain them.
