On 1973 March 18, L. Kohoutek at the Hamburg Bergedorf Observatory discovered a 16th magnitude comet in Hydra on plates taken on March 7 and 9. He described it as diffuse with central condensation. Preliminary elements by B. G. Marsden and S. W. Milbourn showed a small perihelion distance of about 0.14 AU, suggesting the comet would become a bright object towards the end of the year. Photographic observations by R. L.Waterfield assisted by D. Griffiths and G. H. Rutter on March 30.9 and April 2.9 showed a heavily condensed coma 20" in diameter slightly elongated towards the radius vector, magnitude 15.8. A. Mrkos (Klet) made the comet 14.5 magnitude at the end of April and Kohoutek obtained the last observation before it was lost in twilight on May 5.
