We investigate the effect of gas-grain interactions in determining the E/A ratio of CH3CN and its total abundance in Th4C-1. The return of grain mantle material is required to be efficient We show that a desorption process driven by H2 formation may have an appropriate rate. The details of the E → A conversion on surfaces are unknown; if these ideas are confirmed by further study, however, then the chemistry of gas and solid phases in dark interstellar clouds such as TMC-1 must be significantly modified by desorption processes.
