The asteroengineering hypothesis, whereby an advanced civilization
attempts to control the evolution of its parent star, is discussed. It
is argued that, in principle, a star can be engineered into a state that
will prolong its main-sequence life-time and inhibit its tendency to
acquire a red giant form.
