Globular Clusters: General, 47 Tuc, X-Rays: Stars
Scientific paper
Two Rosat HRI observations of 47 Tuc were obtained with a one year interval. Four X-ray sources are detected within the core of 47 Tuc in the first observation. Two of these, and one new source are detected in the core a year later. The positions of two sources are compatible with the position of the X-ray source detected with the Einstein satellite. Four additional sources are detected outside the core, but within 4 core radii; several of these are expected to be cluster members as well. The luminosities of the core sources (L_x_=~10^33^erg/s) are higher than those observed with Rosat of cataclysmic variables, but are in the range observed for soft X-ray transients in quiescence. In addition to the point sources, extended emission is detected out to several core radii; this may be the conglomerate emission of a number of low-luminosity sources.
