Attempts made to resolve the sources of the X-Ray Background (XRB) since the discovery of its existence in 1962 are reviewed. Two main points of view have guided this work: the point source hypothesis and the diffuse hypothesis. The two hypothesis led to the design of very different sets of experiments with their own internal logic and progression; both sets are considered. Given the rich phenomenology revealed to date, it is clear that the properties of individual sources which contributed to the XRB at fainter and fainter fluxes will continue to be studied. The relative contribution of active nuclei and clusters of galaxies is considered.
