Multiwavelength monitoring of the BL Lacertae object 3C 371 centered on the extended X-ray observation during the Rosat all sky survey in Aug. and Sep. 1990 is reported. Significant variations in the X-ray, UV, and optical fluxes were detected, the amplitude and rapidity of which decreased at longer wavelengths. The X-rays flared on Aug. 28 for about a day and showed a gradual rise in flux towards the end of the observation. This flux increase was also found in the UV. The steep X-ray spectrum is well described by a power law model with galactic low energy absorption modified by an absorption line below 1 keV. The photon index was determined to be Gamma = 2.66 +/- 0.09. Compared with a previously measured overall energy distribution of 3C 371, the optical to X-ray spectrum was found to be fainter and steeper with diminishing declines at increasing wavelengths. The radio to infrared spectrum, however, remained unchanged for more than 9 years.
