New aspects for the study of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) opened up as a result of the Rosat mission are reviewed: the soft energy range of the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) combined with the good energy resolution of the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) detector allows an investigation of the spectral properties of the sources in this energetically vital band. The unprecedented high sensitivity of the instrument in the all sky survey yielded an enormous number of previously unknown X-ray AGN for the statistical and morphological exploration of these objects. The AGN observed with Rosat can be grouped quite naturally into three classes, where the number of objects increases by roughly a factor of ten in each class. The first class consists mainly of previously well known, bright 'classical' AGN extensively studied at medium X-ray energies and at other wavelengths. The second class of objects was already known as AGN from optical work but without previous X-ray detections, and in the last class are objects detected for the first time through their X-ray emission. A certain fraction of them has been cataloged previously for example in radio surveys, but their nature remains uncertain. Results from all three of these classes, as they are available at the time of writing with about 90percent of the survey data processed, are discussed.
