A method is developed to construct a mapping model, valid near the 3:1 asteroid mean motion resonance with Jupiter, in the elliptic restricted three-body problem. The method can be applied to any other resonance of the elliptic problem and also to any other system whose Hamiltonian is expressed as a perturbed Hamiltonian where the unperturbed part is integrable. The method uses the average Hamiltonian near the resonance. It is demonstrated that this mapping has the same fixed points and the same stability character as the averaged Hamiltonian.
