Four 6-inch f/8 reflectors fabricated with 1-, 1/2-, 1/4-, and 1/10-wavefront primary mirrors were evaluated under a project designed to determine how good telescope optics actually need be to satisfy amateur astronomers. It is found that the performance of a well-made 6-inch reflector approaches that of a 7-inch Starfire refractor. It is also found that, even at moderate power, the point of best focus is much crisper in a telescope with a 1/4-wavefront mirror than in a 1/2-wavefront mirror. The either-side-of-focus star test, under very good seeing, can easily differentiate 1/4-wavefront and 1/10-wavefront mirrors.
