Digital image centering with the maximum likelihood method is described and applied to PDS measured star image densities. The comparison of the method with two-dimensional Gaussian fitting shows that, for bright and unsaturated images, both algorithms give similar accuracies; for saturated or faint images, the present algorithm is better than two-dimensional Gaussian fitting. With the maximum likelihood method, some systematic effects such as coma and magnitude equation can be reduced significantly.
